Joe,

I've already started the RFI trail on the ceiling issue. I didn't think of the fabric draping over the sprinkler. Thanks.

Todd,

With a fabric ceiling, the maximum allowed clearance from the sprinkler to the ceiling is measured to the roof/ceiling above the fabric, not the fabric itself. Also, the fabric can melt/burn in a fire and drape over the sprinklers, blocking discharge. Hanging the fabric from the sprinklers is the least of their problem.

They are starting early this week........

An Architect wants to support a fabric ceiling from the cup of concealed sprinklers. Section 9.1.1.7 of The Book warns against this, but their argument is that it only mentions piping and hangers and not sprinklers. They are about to take this to the local AHJ. I would think that most AHJs would send them packing, but I don't know this guy and this is for a chapel at a well-known regional Catholic university, which could have some influence. Anybody run into this before? Any ideas besides this section for my defence? Any ideas on protecting spaces with tensioned fabric ceilings?
