The ENGINEERED fabric ceilings have their own rigging and hangers. They shouldn't need to use the sprinklers unless this is an installation by Larry, Darrell and his other brother Darrell.
You could state that the only way they can legally hang from the sprinkler assembly is to obtain a letter from the sprinkler mfgr. Giving them permission. They would need to include details on the ceiling material, weights supported, etc. If they receive a letter giving them approval (which would appear to be unlikely) then unless the AHJ disapproves of the installation, you've put the liability back on the owner and mfgr. I'd write a letter to the A/E & owner expressing my concerns including any code references you can find. Couldn't find anything specifically in 13 forbidding attachment to the sprinkler itself probably because for most professionals that's kind of a no-brainer. These fabric ceilings are engineered systems, not just some cloth bought at Wallymart stapled to the rafters. You should hopefully have a reputable contractor doing the install that you can talk to. Sounds like the Architect isn't real familiar with the actual product, just the concept. He needs some education. Craig L. An Architect wants to support a fabric ceiling from the cup of concealed sprinklers. Section 9.1.1.7 of The Book warns against this, but their argument is that it only mentions piping and hangers and not sprinklers. They are about to take this to the local AHJ. I would think that most AHJs would send them packing, but I don't know this guy and this is for a chapel at a well-known regional Catholic university, which could have some influence. Anybody run into this before? Any ideas besides this section for my defence? Any ideas on protecting spaces with tensioned fabric ceilings? Todd G.
