Travis, Why does your plumbing code have any jurisdiction once you've split off to the fire system. What do they do when a backflow device is required? There aren't any without spring loaded checks? And finall I've had plenty of AHJs tell me that something is in a code somewhere and not be able to find that somewhere. We used to have a guy in Seattle that did that a lot. I don't want to use his real name so let's just say it was Smith. All these in the code somewhere rules that can never be found I call Smithisms and can be found unwritten in the Smith Code. The Smith Code has never been adopted although regularly referenced. 13D defines a check valve as a valve that allows water to flow in only one direction. This is the only direct reference to check valves. 13D also, as you said, does not require any valve to be listed. I'd be asking for chapter and verse not only about the prohibition in the plumbing code but also the legislation that makes the plumbing cofde the governing document relative to sprinkler installation. In my neck of the woods the building code references 13,13R &13D (as appropriate) as the installation standard(s) for sprinklers.
