I would add that you'll want to discuss with the client the potential
for introducing a, shall we say, less than pleasant aroma within the
building.

Without looking up the precise verbiage in NFPA 13, I say YES.
The Main Drain test is a water supply test - done to verify (to a
degree) that the incoming supply fully functional. This is done by
comparing the current test results to the previous. Conducting this
test on the dry system you describe would serve no purpose. The drain
at the primary controls would be used for that. Thus the dry system's
drain is really an auxiliary drain used only when the dry system is
being modified or maintained. I say go ahead and pipe to the floor
drain.

Subject: Main Drain Question
Hello Members,
We are installing a new wet system. Off of the wet system is a
small dry
system with 6 sprinklers to protect a porch area. For us to pipe the
main drain of the dry system we need to core 2 walls to get to the
outside of the building, go up about 15'-0" to the roof of the porch,
and for the most part follow the dry system piping to the end of the
porch.
My question is:
If the control valves between the wet system and dry system are
tampered
& monitored by the building fire alarm to ensure that they remain
open,
can we use the main drain on the wet system to fulfill the main drain
test requirements, and just pipe the drain of the dry system to a
floor
drain?
Thank you in advance,
