Greetings all,

I was inspecting an 'open' on three sides parking garage today and came
across 8" Sch 10 black pipe being run across the ceiling; one line for FDC
on far side of building and another which will be the city supply line to
the main building fire pump. The city water feed will end up being heat
traced and wrapped with insulation, which I was thinking would suffice for
corrosion protection.

It was the 'dry' piping from the FDC across to the main building that I was
expecting to see galvanized for corrosion and resistance to vehicle exhaust,
humidity, and water mist (this property on directly on a main river between
NY & NJ.) Nope, apparently the piping is shown on the plans as Sch 10 black
pipe. Soooooo .......

Can the list members with piping knowledge weigh in on whether or not
exposed piping in this enviroment should be either factory treated or field
treted for protection from corrosion. Since I must not be looking in the
right place is there a code section I can use on this installation ? The
project is under the 1999 Edition of NFPA 13.

It strikes me that the exposed piping will pit and corrode on the exterior
and maybe even the interior due to the moisture and exhaust gas components
that it will be subjected to. How have other similar projects gone ? and
how much of this is my runaway imagination ??

Thanks.
