Scott,

Many jurisdictions require a horn and strobe or an electric bell at
the FDC location. If I were to guess my way back on this one I'd say
it's because they are thinking of water motor gongs always being by
the FDC in older buildings. They construe this to mean that the WMG's
purpose was to sound the location of the FDC. As far as I've been able
to discern the WMG was to notify the old fashioned "cop on the beat"
to go to his call box and call in the fire or for some alert citizen
to do his civic duty and as the sign always says, 'If alarm sounds
notify the fire patrol," or some derivation of that. I think the
proximity of FDC and WMG had more to do with short runs of pipe (look
at old buildings, the FDC and WMG are always right on the other side
of the wall from the riser) and dollars. Once monitoring became the
norm the actual purpose of the WMG was forgotten and replaced with the
current notion. Just speculation on my part but....Whether having some
notification near the FDC is a good idea is another question which
many agree with. As to a pump on a system that would otherwise not
need one but that may be impinged on due to drawdown I would think
that sinnce that could only occur with the FD on the scene that they
are in control of where and how the available water is being used.
Their call on whether to boost the system or divert to hoses a
combination.
