The 2006 IBC Section 912 provides the requisite requirements for 1)
Interconnection, 2) Visible Location, 3) Location 4) Signage. NFPA-13
(2002) 6.9.1 and 6.9.3 provides the requirement for the waterflow alarm. The
AHJ is the approving authority, NFPA-13 (2002) 3.2.1 and 3.2.2. The NJ
Uniform Fire Code, N.J.A.C. 5:70 contains additional signage requirements
for existing, partial, or damp systems.

In that context our jurisdiction prescribes that the required waterflow
alarm be installed directly above the FDC. The appliance can be a bell,
gong, horn or combination with a visual indicator. It does assist the fire
department in rapidly locating the FDC however preplanning, the prior
approval process and standard operating guidelines in the fire department
assure knowledge of fire protection systems.

Lastly in the case of a public water purveyor a pump is only required where
the automatic water source cannot supply the required pressure. The fire
department is not classified as the automatic water source and is
responsible to supplement the system where a Fire Department Connection is
prescribed in the code.

Subject: 6 degrees of separation-- making the FDC

finished a sprinkler system design.
it was close to the 10% buffer, so
the AHJ said, "what if the fire department
draws down too much water from the
hydrants and we don´t have enough
pressure?"

I say, "does that mean you want a
fire pump?"

He says, "yes, I would prefer one."

I say, "i was not a good firefighter, but
I do remember our engineers were
pretty keen on making the connections,
are you saying that the first due engine
doesn't make the connections?"

He says, "yes, that happens about 20%
of the time. They arrive at a building, and
don't know if there are connections there or not."

I think, "this IS a problem,"

"...but not mine."

should we put signs up
outside of all buildings with FDC's or is this
something the engineer/driver should know,
or something the officer in the bucket should
tell him?
