I think this was originally an extra hazard system so that would explain
it.

In years past staggered spacing was required in extra hazard
applications.  At that time you only had 1/2 (5.6K) and 3/4" (8.0K)
sprinklers. You may also find some 3/4" pipe used on old pipe schedule
systems.
