Only time I've ever seen it was to make sure the spacing exceeded 6'-0" between the heads, when the branchlines were less than 6'-0" between them.

Subject: Pipe scheduled systems - head stagger

I have a retrofit of a system put in in 1963 where the heads on the
branch lines are staggered. What was the reasoning for this back then?
Thanks,
Dewayne
