Randy,
I can find nothing in 14/2007 that prohibits what you're proposing. In
fact the way the definitions are numbered it would seem that if
automatic or manual standpipes are sub subjects under the dry
standpipe heading and wet standpipes and combined standpipes are at
the same level as dry then I can infer that combined would not be
restricted to one or the other. I didn't look in IBC but unless
there's a general restriction I don't think it deviates from 14 until
you hit the magic 75 ft. I believe at that point you're restricted to
wet automatic standpipes and so the riser portion of the combined pipe
would be wet by default. As to your second question 14 requires floor
control valves on combined systems. Unless I've missed something
(which I've been doing a lot lately) the hierarchy is that the
building code (presumably IBC) requires a Class I standpipe when the
highest habitable floor area is 30 ft. or more above the lowest level
of fire department access and then refers you to NFPA 14. 14 allows
automatic, semiautomatic or manual standpipes, in wet or dry
configurations. 14 allows combined pipes with certain restrictions one
of which is that floor control valves for the sprinklers be provided
but says nothing about restricting the type. Now I wait to see what
I've missed.

Forum Members,
I have a two part question.
1. Can I have a combined standpipe on a dry system? I have 4 story
factory
building that's not heated. Fourth floor is above 30 feet so I need a
standpipe. I have a heated pump room with a dry pipe valve. I was
first
looking at the project with a dry manual standpipe and a separate dry
sprinkler system riser. I would like to combine the two and save
piping
2. Is it OK to put floor control valves in on dry pipe system? There
is a
removable section of roof where they take equipment out. I would
like to
give the facility the ability to shut individuals floors down for
modification to the systems.
Thanks,
Randy Knutson
