I am a freelance designer and I never understood this arguing with a customer. Running a calc should take no more than a few minutes. In AutoSprink it takes about 10-20 seconds to draw a remote area depending on how complex and cut up it is. He should be able to quickly check and see what area is most demanding. It seems like a no brainer.
I think George has the right idea. A freelancer should not do anything that he knows is in conflict with NFPA, but should be willing to do what the customer asks as long as there is no conflict. Just tell the guy to run the second calc and stop complaining. If he is right, he proves his worth to you and you will likely use him for all jobs in the future. If he is wrong, but handles himself professionally, you will likely use him on more jobs in the future. If he is wrong and handles himself like an @$$, you will never use him again. The ball is in his court. Good luck with it. Let us know how it comes out. That is the beauty of this forum, it lets us learn from others experiences. Now, for my plea for all freelance designers out there: If you use this email forum and learn from it, pay the $200 AFSA designer dues and support the forum. I know I have well earned back my yearly dues with all of the knowledge gained from this forum. Too bad it does not count for NICET credits. I learn more here than some of the seminars I have taken for CPD credits. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of George Church Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2009 7:43 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: 1.2 Leg of Remote Area Well, I guess the other way to convince him would be to tell him you'll pay him to do it the way YOU think is right, and if he elects to calc it another way for free, hey- it's a free country. And he needs to understand the pecking order- you've got the checkbook. glc -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Joe Burtell Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2009 8:42 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: 1.2 Leg of Remote Area First: He is stating that because the longer leg in now parallel to the crossmain, the code says you must still meet the 1.2 times rule on the longer leg. Second: Because he feels he must satisfy the 1.2 rule. First, how's he ignoring the requirement that the minimum 1.2 x sqrt of MRA must be parallel to the branch lines? Second, how's he ignoring 22.4.4.1.1.3, which allows for such cases? Third, make him do two calculations, one his way, one the way we're describing it to you, and see which one is most demanding. All things being equal, his way won't be. Then ask him to guarantee in writing, and back it up with a bond, that there won't ever be a fire in which grows to achieve the worst case flow, and see what he says. And hey, maybe he's right and the rest of us have been wrong all these years. We can always learn something.
