Per NFPA 13, 2007:

21.20.19.2 Installation Requirements.
21.20.19.2.1 In buildings sprinklered in accordance with NFPA 13, closets
less than 12 ft2 (1.1 m2) in area in individual dwelling units shall not be
required to be sprinklered. Closets that contain equipment such as washers,
dryers, furnaces, or water heaters shall be sprinklered regardless of size.
[101:30.3.5.4]

Previously, in areas where I have done work that did not recognize the Life
Safety Code, we could not use this wording to eliminate sprinklers in small
closets in apartment buildings. Basically, NFPA 13 said it could only be
eliminated in hotels / motels:

8.15.8.2* Closets and Pantries. Sprinklers are not required in clothes
closets, linen closets, and pantries within dwelling units in hotels and
motels where the area of the space does not exceed 24 ft2 (2.2 m2), the
least dimension does not exceed 3 ft (0.9 m), and the walls and ceilings are
surfaced with noncombustible or limited-combustible materials.

So, even if the LSC is not recognized in an area, can you still take the
exception noted above in Chap 21 and eliminate sprinklers in small closets
since it is now part of the body of NFPA 13?

Please feel free to call if you have any questions or comments.
