I reviewed a fire similar to this in 1996 in Auckland, where an occupant of
a resthome set fire to his clothes while smoking and using oxygen.
Apparently the oxygen regulator was leaking. The fire occurred in the early
hours of the morning. He was back in a new room later that day, after being
treated for minor burns in a hospital. The sprinklers were standard
response - if I remember correctly, 11mm bulbs.
Later that year, a similar event occurred in another resthome in New
Zealand. One of the few lives reported to have been lost in this country
from fire in sprinklered buildings. In the first case, I think it could be
safely said that the sprinkler system exceeded expectations.
At the thought of smoking while using oxygen, I recall at the time thinking
that I was glad that I gave up smoking some 5 years earlier.
