There are a lot of factors involved in making the determination. Belt material - combustible or non-combustible
Enclosed or open - enclosed are almost impossible to fight with hose stream attack if not protected internally. High elevation - again, another hose stream and access issue. Value and importance to client - if the conveyor is handling combustible material and/or is of a combustible composition, and/or is of high value to the overall production of the plant site then it should be protected. Ask this question, if the conveyor was destroyed, would it significantly impact production? Any Underwriter requirements? Any local AHJ/FD requirements? Any owner Loss prevention requirements? There is plenty of data between NFPA and FM on how to protect them. The IFC has some direction for requirements of various types but not all types. These are some of the questions I'd be asking the client and other in order to make that determination if your particular conveyor type isn't mentioned in the IFC. Craig L.
