Get the MSDS! The MSDS sheets on the product will make recommendations on
fire fighting materials.

Some of these are propylene glycol based, some are ethylene glycol based, they
are mostly Class IIIB, water miscible, combustibles. If they are deicing
runways there are a host of other components used for that. If they are only
doing recovery and not purifying or reconstuting then you may be dealing with a
diluted composition.

There should be a whole lot more info from the Architect on the plans than what
you describe. They should have had someone with special hazards fire
protection experience set the criteria and define the basis for design.

Depending on the composition of the product, some of these installations can
require foam-water sprinkler systems.

Other issues that they may not have considered is containment of sprinkler
discharge. If they've already specified a dike height, what did they base that
on if the sprinkler system hasn't been designed yet? They've got to contain
their largest vessel plus 20 minutes of sprinkler discharge. I'd ask what
value they assumed for sprinkler discharge. Hopefully they know that most of
this stuff can't be allowed into the ground or into public sewers and sized the
containment area accordingly.

The other questions is what kind of process requires a boiler? Are there other
chemicals being used in some process?

Subject: aircraft deicing fluid recovery facility

I was asked to look at 15,000 sq.ft. aircraft deicing fluid recovery facility.
Does Ordinary Hazard Group II seem right for protection? I don't have much
info other than a floor plan that show dimensions, 4 tank storage with a 24"
dike, lab, toilet, boiler room and what looks like a wash down area (has a
trench), garage doors are 20' wide. Metal building with 60'
peak. All info I have. Any insight or experience with this would be helpful.
