the plug likely caused it to trip. I've seen experienced fitters do that. My favorite plug option is when I see relief ports on RPZ backflows plugged. As the AHJ, you should find out who did the last inspection on the DPV and if the ball drip was noted.

Tom - if you are still curious about pics I have plenty of the DPV and the internal during reset I could send .. Although a 1973 DPV doesn't have the same allure as a 1940's would.
