Standpipe risers in stairs are common, but pipes just passing through the stair
are often disallowed.

Better make sure you know what the local AHJ's perspective is on the matter
because there can be great inconsistency on this issue.

Be careful with this one, in Seattle the Building Official does not allow
sprinkler pipe penetrations of stairways unless is strictly to serve a
sprinkler in the space (eg: no pass through arrangements).

Reed-

So if it's a single stairway I can pass my sprinkler pipe straight through,
awesome. I've always routed the pipe out and around a stairway. Thanks for
the info.

Subject: RE: Stairways

In the Vertical Exit Enclosures section (1020) of IBC 2006 it says that
penetrations are prohibited except for ...sprinkler piping....

1020.1.2 Penetrations. Penetrations into and openings through an exit
enclosure are prohibited except for required exit doors, equipment and
ductwork necessary for independent pressurization, sprinkler piping,
standpipes, electrical raceway for fire department communication systems and
electrical raceway serving the exit enclosure and terminating at a steel box
not exceeding 16 square inches (0.010 m2). Such penetrations shall be
protected in accordance with Section 712. There shall be no penetrations or
communication openings, whether protected or not, between adjacent exit
enclosures.

Is that what you are thinking of?

Subject: Stairways

Forum,
I've always been taught that you cannot pass a pipe through a stairway, can
someone point me to that section in the code book and or give me your
thoughts on it?

Regards,
