One the one hand, in this particular case, sure. But I cannot count the number
of schools projects we've gotten back with the plancheck correction to increase
density from LH to OH2 in rooms noted as "Computer Lab". There's a vernacular
in many industries and education occupancies have their own lexicon. One would
think that an agency that reviews nothing but schools and courthouses would be
up on the uses that they plan check, no? Let's see ... community college ...
right in the middle of San Diego ... no airfield on campus ... no FAA
jurisdiction ... "hangar" shown filled with work benches and a speaker's
platform ... hmmmm ... Toto, could it be that perhaps we're not in general
aviation anymore?

"Could you change the word "hangar" to "shop" on the plans
please?"..................Exactly

It would be no different than an architect referring to a big room in a
restaurant as the "nightclub". I'd question it as well. If the property
owner has no intention of using it as an aviation hanger than a change of
name should be without objection. It is what it is.

I can do better that this one. We're working on a local community college
campus, expanding the Aviation Sciences building. It's an old Type V,
block walls and bowstring trusses with a curved roof, about 22' high at the
peak. It currently houses two dry airplanes and a dry helicopter. And I
mean dry as in no lube, nothing. The expansion has the aircraft moving
outside under new non-combustible canopies and the big room being converted
to a teaching shop with work benches. They've always referred to the big
room as "The Hangar" so the architect showed it on the plans as such. The
AHJ (State of Californicate) takes a look at the preliminary design
submittal and says, "Hangar? Well then you better build it per NFPA 409!"
And so we're going to set a meeting where we can hit the plans reviewer over
the head with a 24" until he comes around ... This is the Major Leagues of
consulting: "Uh, Mr. Architect? Could you change the word "hangar" to
"shop" on the plans please?"

Did you try, "409 exists because hangers are not warehouses, but more
like special garages some with repair facilities?" Of course Boeing
has their planes in high piled arrays so that when an you want ten or
twenty 7XX's they just pull them off the rack, dump them in cardboard
boxes full of packing peanuts and ship them UPS ground straight to
your door.
