That section is for fire service mains that would be run aboveground, not
interior sprinkler piping. Say a building was built on top of the underground
fire main and someone decided to just rise up and run it inside the building
and then back down and reconnect to the UG main instead of going around the
building and staying underground. That's what that section is dealing with.

Subject: Protection of Sprinkler Pipe

I thought I read in NFPA that sprinkler piping cannot pass through areas of
a building that did not have sprinkler protection, the closest thing I could
find was 8.16.4.3. Maybe I'm thinking of plastic pipe? Any ideas?
