Craig-
Right on, I knew that wasn't the section I was thinking of but was the
closest thing I could find. Are you aware of any code that prohibits running
sprinkler pipe through unprotected areas?

That section is for fire service mains that would be run aboveground, not
interior sprinkler piping. Say a building was built on top of the
underground fire main and someone decided to just rise up and run it inside
the building and then back down and reconnect to the UG main instead of
going around the building and staying underground. That's what that section
is dealing with.

I thought I read in NFPA that sprinkler piping cannot pass through areas of
a building that did not have sprinkler protection, the closest thing I could
find was 8.16.4.3. Maybe I'm thinking of plastic pipe? Any ideas?
