Craig, I agree with your statements below as they apply to your situation, and I guess you and I have different perspectives and interpretations because we have different jobs...you being a contractor and me being an AHJ. The opinions that I provided were for only as they apply to my jurisdiction which does not include North or South Carolina. rick

For example I have had office areas which were required to be sprinklered either by owner or underwriter request and to serve that area I had to pass through an unsprinklered F-2 occupancy. The F-2 didn't require sprinklers so I have no grounds to apply 8.1.1. I have sprinklered S-1 Storage rooms which were within S-2 areas with the proper physical separation. Again Main running through non-sprinklered area to get to sprinklered area. As far as pump house, if it's an electric pump, no sprinklers required, although fire separation required between pump room and adjacent occupancies if pump room within a building. Sprinklers required as specifically referenced only for diesel primarily due to the diesel fuel hazard located within the pump house. I'm not going to even talk about plastic pipe in a warehouse. Item (1) "Sprinklers shall be installed throughout the premises." The handbook commentary explains that fire in unsprinklered areas could spread and grow into sprinklered areas. Partial protection is not recommended. If you intend to install the sprinkler riser and the feed main in an unsprinklered area, and run the piping into the adjoining sprinklered space, then fire in the unsprinklered space may compromise the main before the sprinklers have the chance to operate. This is the same reasoning as requiring sprinklers in a detached fire pump house or not allow exposed plastic piping in warehouse occupancies. You must protect the piping and equipment in order that they will function during a fire condition. Maybe you can enclose the piping in a 2-hour chase or use some kind of fire-wrap to protect it...or even install sprinklers 10-ft O.C. along the length of the main to spot protect it...maybe. This might be allowed with approval of the AHJ and all parties involved with the property. rick matsuda city of dallas -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2011 3:36 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Protection of Sprinkler Pipe What edition? 2007, I'm not seeing anything related to the question. Say a building was built on top of the underground fire main and someone decided to just rise up and run it inside the building and then back down and reconnect to the UG main instead of going around the building and staying underground. That's what that section is dealing with. Craig L.
