First the booth is not a duct even though the air moves directly
through it. Is the room that return and supply ducts terminate at a
duct or plenum? i don't think so. Now for the real question. I'd argue
that a vertical duct is not what is being discussed except a vertical
duct could be considered a stack and a duct that exhausts to the
outside at is terminus is definitely definitely a stack (unless their
is some special definition changing the general meaning of the word to
something specific and different). So even though I'd like to argue
that a single head near the top in a typical booth stack would flood
the the entire thing, and with a gravity assist for the lower regions
no matter how tall, I think I have to agree with Ryan that the code,
or at least that passage, is pretty clear. Your job now is to find out
if that passage only applies to some special condition that you don't
have. Just today a couple of students performing a code search as part
of their contribution to a large project went to IFC before the IBC,
ignored a clause that stated "where required by XXX", and
misinterpreted what throughout meant. The result was that they thought
they had to put smoke detectors in racks in a fully sprinklered
warehouse. Claggart to Billy Budd: "The sea is calm you said.
Peaceful. Calm above, but below a world of gliding monsters preying on
their fellows. Murderers, all of them. Only the strongest teeth
survive. And who's to tell me it's any different here on board, or
yonder on dry land?"
