I don't concur with the statement they don't have a stellar success rate. In some sprinkler research I found a statistically significant number of fires put out with extinguishers in SPRINKLERED buildings. We including I often speak of the holy grail of sprinklers but these very cheap cousins are valuable. I guarantee they have put out more fires than fires alarms with all the strobes and costs. And lost in the data is a fire knocked down so it's smaller than would have been when the FD arrived.

Britain is considering doing away with fire extinguishers in some office buildings, but that is another issue, and for another root cause that I won't divert to here; I doubt the issue will be adopted either. what happens if there is a fire, and no one is around? can we tolerate having the fire burn through plastic seals, or wires that controls dampers, fans, door locks, etc. and thus possibly lose negative pressurization and disperse room contents with the smoke? maybe there is simply not enough to burn in the laboratory to begin with, for instance, are all containers glassware or metal? Are there no ketone or alcohol solvents and disinfectants? Are there no incubation, evaporation or fermentation operations? Does the vivarium contain non-combustible caging? Maybe too much to consider, but someone (perhaps at a higher level) needs to be given notice as to whether release of pathogenic aerosols because of insufficient fire protection is a tolerable risk. Included in that consideration is the crass realization that a fire in such a facility will not draw the scrutiny or publicity that a nuclear accident will, as long as the collateral damage or kill is low enough -- or no nexus is made as to the origin of the stuff. scot deal excelsior fire _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://fireball.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum For Technical Assistance, send an email to: [email protected] To Unsubscribe, send an email to:[email protected] (Put the word unsubscribe in the subject field) _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://fireball.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum For Technical Assistance, send an email to: [email protected] To Unsubscribe, send an email to:[email protected] (Put the word unsubscribe in the subject field)
