Agreed- we also had an extended alarm time that bleeding air off cured.

A similar "best practices" item would be what is the best way(s) to provide
longevity to dry-pipe systems. I have a *&% PE making us hot-dip after welding
outlets (or thread galv 4" sch 40) which started me investigating.
There seems to be a lot of merit to black pipe with either nitrogen or a
regenerative air dryer like general Air has, to minimize/eliminate moisture
that causes corrosion, as a better answer than galvanized piping. A fellow
Forumite is looking into this with SFPE and his explanation made a ton of
sense- and I already knew this august gentleman is someone who, when he speaks,
I listen.

Enjoy the weekend- time to go repair the damage I did to my marriage by working
together this week!

I'd say the annex material in NFPA 13 2010 A.8.17.4.2 suggesting locating wet
system test connections at the riser to eliminate the introduction of air into
the system would be one reason to believe they may be on to something. They
aren't the only company moving in this direction. Also we've had some alarm
issues on a particular building we service and several manufacturers who have
no stake in the "air vent" business immediately suggested trapped air was a
concern. The installation of air vents has dropped the alarm test time from
about 1 minute to about 30 seconds... On a system with large sections of
trapped piping at least, they're definitely worth looking at.

Subject: Automatic Air Vents

What is the forum's opinion in regard to the Potter Air Vent and Automatic Air
Release that they are hawking to preserve wet pipe sprinkler systems by venting
the trapped air at the top of the systems? Their website is
http://www.pottersignal.com/news_sprinkler_PAVPAARB.aspx. I don't see the
value.

Thank You
