They should be determining separation requirements. Separation depends on occupancy classifications as well as a few other issues. Second, go to the State or county website and find the fire marshal's page or building code office page, in many cases there will be a link to their applicable codes. Some states post a copy of their codes on-line and others link you to the ICC website where you can view their codes. Google is a wonderful tool. Craig L.
