If you go with 2 grates to permit air flow, the temperature in the channel
should be closer to the room side of the insulation than that on the other
side of the insulation. I would be concerned if there were no grates. Make
sure you don't use plastic piping, as otherwise there will be an additional
restriction of having a head within 12 inches of the grates.
