Damien - I can't speak with absolute authority, but I'm pretty sure FM does not
recognize the room design method. However, I THINK you may be able to get them
to limit design areas when you have a room that's surrounded by rated walls.
E.g. a storage room surrounded by 1-hr. walls could be designed to the room
only (assuming it is under the 1,500 sq.ft. or whatever design area). I would
verify with the FM Engineer on the job. Actually, having said that, you should
attempt to talk to that engineer in the first place. It is ultimately their
decision what they allow, and you may get one who is more sympathetic to your
arguments for room design.

Subject: FM Room Design type calc?

Dear forum.

I am unable to see anywhere in the new FM Datasheets (i.e. 2-0 &3-0 as opposed
to the old 2-8N), where it allows for any type of a Room Design type
calculation. Not having this allowance would seem to create havoc in certain
situations. E.g. If you have a storage room (that would otherwise qualify for
Room Design), next to an administrative area. Or where you have some rooms
protected with EC spks next to areas with SSP/Us.

Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated.
