It is not specific to sprinkler systems, but we had good experiences sending personnel to Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) Plans Examiner I/II classes. http://www.mfri.org/cgi-bin/coursedetails.cgi?CID=1150&SC=3
Duane Johnson, PE Program Manager Division of the Fire Marshal (Support Contractor) Office of Research Services National Institutes of Health 301-496-0487 "Protecting Science - One Sprinkler at a Time" -----Original Message----- From: David Blackwell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, May 07, 2012 12:04 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Classes for new AHJ plan reviewers To Roland [and any other knowledgeable forum-ites with good advice]: I have one recent hire on staff and one starting later this month that I'd like to have trained externally by a nationally recognized program [vs. on-the-job training]. Both new hires have mechanical engineering B.S. degrees so they both have training in theory and math of mechanics and hydraulics in general... but they have not been specifically trained in detail in the world of information on fire protection sprinkler systems. Review of fire protection sprinkler systems is our largest category of plan reviews; and, my new hires will be functioning in an AHJ role reviewing fire protection sprinkler system shop drawings, and engineering design documents. I want them starting off with the best training so they are, as soon as possible, correctly functioning in their new capacity as an AHJ reviewing and approving plans. QUESTION: What class or classes do you recommend [from AFSA and/or other providers] for me to consider sending my new hires to? Thank you for your time and sage advice. Respectfully, David W. S. I started to say before getting overly precise (but that horse has left the barn), it might be helpful to keep in mind that the K valve on a sprinkler is NOT a constant at different flows. It is an AVERAGED result for flows from 7 psi to 100 psi.
