I think the model was an entry directly from the unit. We all seen this,
through a door from the utility room, or down a stair.

The garage like the unit has a 1-hr wall to adjacent units.

Square footage is implied to be small, ceiling low. Sprinklers operate fast. It
would be odd to use more than 4 heads.

From a fire safety point of view I think you will meet the goal. But if I went
through a locked door to an area accessible only by one unit, and what defined
the area was chain link fence I'd think different.

Prescriptive code writing is difficult. For that matter so is performance code.

Matt:

To make sure I understand this, tenant leaves their unit, or area the building
isolates for fire, enters a common area that is another separation, then uses a
key to enter another private area with their auto or storage? I would guess
this door is a rated door, through another rated wall.

Do I have the picture right?

Subject: garage under apartments

I am looking at an apartment building where the first floor is half garage
spaces (instead of apartments). Each garage is assigned to one apartment and
has a locking door on it, but as you exit the garage, you enter a hallway that
serves all of the units on the first floor.

The question: would these garages be considered "accessible by only one unit"?
(able to be protected by 13R 6.8.3.3 as part of a dwelling unit)

It seems like they are, since they cannot be entered by people from the other
units. Any thoughts?
