Steve,

This may have more bells and whistles, but some of the newer control panels
have this option already. Maybe just more user friendly.

Based on the advice of our seasoned pump vendor, someone should be present
during the routine runs to notice things like coupling damage or even just
strange noises.

They also recommend a good ol fashion pressure drop to initiate the routine
run. Mountain Dew 20 oz. bottles make great water collectors from the sensing
line valve.

I'm not sure about the new version of NFPA 20, but the 2008 edition has a list
of items to observe during the weekly run. So unless this comes with a camera
system with sound and a bunch of sensors to monitor the conditions, I am not
sure I see the point in the auto start.

Maybe this is supposed to be a glorified alarm clock so the qualified staff
remember when the local alarms go off to do the pump check.

Subject: Remote fire pump start

I was asked about this product and fail to see any real value for it. But I
thought I'd throw this out and start discussion:
http://www.262apex.com/md-xxii.html

It's a remote start controller and they pitch it as satisfying NFPA 25, §8.3.1.
8.3.2.6 specifically says, "An automatic timer shall be permitted to be
substituted for the starting procedure." This all seems to be adding up to
something of value, but I have the following questions about the product and
industry practices:

1) The product data boasts that it's UL 508 listed, but that's for general
controls and it's certainly NOT a listed fire pump controller. Anyone agree
with me that this could void the listing of an installed or proposed pump
assembly?

2) A completely remote start is not in accordance with NFPA 25 §8.3.2.7
which requires that there be qualified personnel in attendance whenever the
pump is in operation.

3) Anyone agree with me that if you take 8.3.2.7 literally, there's no
real application for a product like this?

4) If there is an application, can someone explain how to apply this type
of a control and what the value is to owner and/or service contractor?

Thanks,

Steve Leyton
