Ron, If the ceiling in the shower is at the same elevation as the "lintel", is it in fact a lintel or a soffit? If it is a soffit, then I would say that it is part of the same compartment. I would think to be considered a lintel, the ceiling heights on both sides would have to be higher than the bottom of the supposed lintel.
