16.3.3.2 does not say you can use ESFR with solid shelves as long as in rack protection is required. I would say that if there are solid shelves, ESFR sprinklers are out.

I responded that per NFPA 13, 2007 (the current recognized addition in PA) 16.3.3.2 you can't use ESFR with solid shelving. Now the customer wants to know. If we install in-racks at the 27' and 11' levels could we still use ESFR at the roof? (sort of defeats the purpose but it's not my money)I have spent the last hour going through chapters 16 & 17. I can't find anything that say you could do that. But I also haven't found anything that says you can't other than 16 .3.3.2 & 17.2.3.1.1. At this point I want to hang my hat on that and say no we can't. However I may be missing something so I thought I would throw it out for discussion.
