That's exactly how I interpreted it. That assembly prevents the pipe from
moving at the grooved coupling on the main as is required to keep the head
within the design criteria.

Just have never been questioned on it and am wondering if anyone else has. And
if so, what is the best solution.

All that is required is "restraint". That can be 12 ga. wire if you so choose.
Look at NFPA 13, 2013 ed., 9.2.3.7 & the Annex material for it. The same
criteria goes back two or three editions.

Subject: Lateral support for sprigs

I have an AHJ in Iowa (non-seismic) looking for a listing for lateral supports
on sprigs in an attic. We have sprigs for back to back attic sprinklers running
from the main to the peak of the roof and have them supported with loop hanger
ring-rod-and threaded fastener.

I cannot find anything that requires a listing for this assembly nor can I find
any listing for something like this.

Any help would be appreciated.
