Matt,

My take and past practice is to use pendent heads as shown in figure A.8.15.4.
The idea and I believe intent for the water to spray on the Draft Stop and fall
down to the floor thus forming the “Water Curtain”. If you were to use
Sidewalls I would think they need to point at the Draft Stop to perform that
function. Chapter 8.15.4 Vertical Openings, 2010 ed.

These would be mounted in the draftstop (a boxed out steel I-beam) pointed away
from the opening.

I am not clear on the intent of the design. The closely spaced sidewall
sprinklers would cover more floor space than closely spaced uprights or
pendants – but they would not throw as much water against the draft stop. Not
sure how it would compare in terms of effectiveness.

Sidewalks pointed at the draft stop?

I thought part of the reasoning was to have water hit the draft stop and create
a wall of water.

I have an application where an open stairway will require closely spaced heads
and draft stopping. The construction of the opening lends itself to the use of
sidewall sprinklers set in the draftstop to serve as the closely spaced heads.
Is there anything that prohibits this? In reviewing the handbook, it only
mentions sprinklers – not a particular type, but this still seems ‘out of the
ordinary’.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
