I'm suggesting the isolating the check valves by closing the bypass/suction 
valves one at a time and seeing if the system will hold pressure as you and 
Jamie have recommended.  The check valve listed and ordered was a standard 
pattern valve and not a wafer valve or something similar.  The take out is 
13.5" and the valve cut sheet does not indicate the clapper would protrude past 
the grooves.  I will also ask if the replaced check valve was inspected and if 
there was any residue or junk in there.  Thank you for the tips!

That narrows it down. Signs seem to point to the check valves. Open one of the 
valves (bypass or suction) to figure out which one is the problem.



It is possible that the turbulence is too much for the check valve. You might 
also have gunk in your water that gums up the checks. How do they look on the 
inside? Also – we briefly used a brand of check valve that was so narrow its 
components would extend beyond its grooves. Is there mechanical interference 
with the elbow and check valve?

Yes, if the pump suction and bypass valves are closed, the system can get up to

Is the jockey pump putting out enough pressure? Can you get the system up to 
pressure with the jockey if you close the pump suction valve?

I have a fire pump installation that is having issues.  The contractor has 
successfully completed a pump startup and test.  During a separate follow up 
visit, the pump technician began having trouble getting the system back up to 
maintenance pressure after fire pump operation.  The discharge piping has an 
elbow between the pump and the discharge check valve.  It was first suggested 
that this check valve was defective, so it was replaced.  The same problem was 
experienced after this replacement.  It has been suggested that the elbow 
directly after the pump is causing turbulence that is preventing the check 
valve from closing properly.  I can find nothing in NFPA 20 or the handbook to 
suggest this is a concern.  Have any of you seen this?  What would your 
recommendation be?
