Ron,

I am basing my opinion off of fire protection hydraulics and experience. After
combing through the latest NFPA 13 edition (2019), it mentions nothing
regarding flex hose assemblies in pipe schedule systems---only that two
sprinklers can be installed on 1" pipe. This is another NFPA 13 gray area.
Light Hazard pipe schedule is probably based off of 15 feet of 1" schedule 40
pipe per one head. A Racoflex 40" flex hose assembly per UL listing is
equivalent to 21 feet of 1" schedule #40 pipe. 36" feet of 1" schedule 40 pipe
supplying one head should probably be calculated. There can be a significant
pressure loss. I've had AHJs call this out before.

Steve,

Good point. But, if an AHJ catches on to this it can really bring down a small
job.

BE ADVISED - This email originated outside EMCOR.

Tyson,

While I tend to agree with you and can think of many pipe scheduling rules
going back half a century or more that would suggest that flex heads are ad
were outside of the scope of a pipe scheduled system I'm curious as to what
criteria you're basing your opinion on. At face value, it would seem that they
would be fine as long as no more than two were attached to one-inch pipe in
light and ordinary hazard situations, or only one per length of one-inch pipe
in extra hazard (extra hazard pope schedule systems having been allowable in
times past).
