TECHNICAL UPDATE
DECEMBER 27, 2006
-----------------------------

"WE HAVE 1-1/4" AND 1-1/2" RISER NIPPLES ON A 2-1/2" MAIN THAT ARE LONGER THAN 3 FT. WHEN PROVIDING SEISMIC PROTECTION, ARE THEY REQUIRED TO HAVE A FOUR-WAY BRACE?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2002 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that they are required to have a four- way brace.

Section 9.3.5.5.1 requires the top of risers to have a four-way race. This is not just a system riser but ALL risers, as identified by the definition in chapter 3 (i.e. the vertical supply pipes in a sprinkler system) and the use of a plural tense in both the base criteria and the definition. It is also worth mentioning that it does not apply to sprig-ups since they have their own definition in chapter 3 (i.e. vertical pipe supplying a single sprinkler) as well as 9.3.6.5 that requires restraint when sprig-ups are longer than 4 ft. There was additional clarification in the 2002 edition that it is not necessary to brace short risers (i.e. less than 3 ft).

Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE registered in fire protection engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and Tom Wellen, a degreed fire protection engineering technologist. This is provided with the understanding that the AFSA assumes no liability for this opinion or actions taken on it and they are not to be considered the official position of the NFPA or its technical committees.
