TECHNICAL UPDATE
February 21, 2007
-----------------------------------
A sprinkler pipe is located in a corridor that supplies both
sprinklers in the corridor and branch lines to the living units. The
pipe is concealed above drywall ceilings except for the stair in a
nine-story building. You have asked the following question:
"Are flushing connections required at end of 11/2-in. diameter CPVC
sprinkler lines with sprinkler drops directly attached to 11/2-in.
lines?"
We have reviewed the 2002 Edition of NFPA 13 you indicated as the
applicable Standard. Our informal interpretation is that flushing
connections are required.
CPVC pipe is not exempt from flushing connections. The CPVC pipe does
not have corrosion issues with the piping, but there is a potential
of foreign materials entering the system. Section 8.14.16 is clear
that all sprinkler systems shall be arranged for flushing, readily
removable fittings shall be provided at the end of all cross mains,
and all cross mains shall terminate in 11/4-inch or larger pipe. The
piping in the corridor is serving two purposes. One, it supplies the
sprinklers in the corridor, and the other is to supply branch lines
to the residential living units. The confusion lies within the piping
in the corridor meeting both definitions of a branch line and a cross
main. The corridor piping fits closer to the definition of a cross
main, thus flushing connections would be required.
