ESFR in Concealed Spaces

"Can ESFR sprinklers rated at 200 deg. F be used as attic or concealed space
applications?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition that you indicated as the applicable
standard as well as the 2016 edition. Our informal interpretation is that ESFR
sprinklers might be allowed under certain circumstances.

ESFR sprinklers would not be appropriate for these spaces for a new design. A
concealed space created with existing ESFR sprinklers from building
modifications is plausible. The 2016 edition of NFPA 13 added new text in
Section 8.3.3.1 that sprinklers in light hazard occupancies can be an ESFR
sprinkler. Section 8.15.1.3 specifies that concealed spaces are light hazard.
Thus, ESFR sprinklers can remain in place. However, if the concealed space
meets Section 8.15.1.6 for horizontal concealed combustible spaces, then the
sprinkler protection should be listed for use in horizontal combustible
concealed spaces (with a slope not exceeding 2 in 12). As such, this would not
allow ESFR sprinklers to remain in place.

Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice
President of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE registered
in fire protection engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic
sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and
Tom Wellen, a PE registered in fire protection engineering. This is provided
with the understanding that the AFSA assumes no liability for this opinion or
actions taken on it and they are not to be considered the official position of
the NFPA or its technical committees.
