Hi,
My answers are below

For classroom use with macOS and some unsophisticated users, I would
like a version of Spyder that is a "true" macOS app, so that double
clicking on .py files opens them in it. DMG installers for this have
been provided at https://github.com/spyder-ide/spyder/releases but
none for versions after 3.0.2, with the message being "use Anaconda".
The classroom computers also have Anaconda, so apparently it is unsafe
to install "stand-alone Spyder" using pip.
Are there DMG installers for recent versions of Spyder available
somewhere?
Nop. I don't have time to create those installers anymore. But there are
instructions to do it here:
https://github.com/spyder-ide/mac-application
Alternatively (and maybe better), is there a way to create a "wrapper"
for the Spyder within Anaconda which makes it act like a true macOS
application?
It's possible, but you have to google for it because I don't know
exactly how that's done.
Cheers,
Carlos
