L123 was working fine until a couple of days ago when I discovered
that I
could not log in. No system upgrades or changes in the past couple of
weeks (other than firefox) so I've no idea why it broke. But, break it
did.
After a lot of looking, thinking, and exchanging thoughts with a local
perl coder and a remote postgres admin I found and fixed the problem.
The permissions on /usr/local/pgsql/* were 700 and need to be 755
(except
for the data/ subdirectory).
All's well now and the holidays may continue.
Best of the season to all of you,
Rich

Directories don't chmod themselves; perhaps you have some forensics to
do. That, or your Distro's package management needs to be caned. :^)
