Not sure what could be wrong. LedgerCart works fine on Ubuntu 10.04 and I have not tried on Ubuntu 12.04. If you still can't do it, I can login to your server and set it up for you and see what went wrong. I am hoping to get a virtual appliance out with everything configured.
