Long story short, in my experience: - openvpn bridged network over 2 sites (and certainly many more) is transparent and works fine if the upstream bandwidth of the site where LMS is located is good enough. - Local service is always better, with or without VPN. I'm using Syncthing with great success to mirror directories. It's a p2p, per folder service. It is absolutely not a backup system, rather the contrary (deletes propagate faster than copies!) So make an offline backup first. - The Pi is a great platform for any of this. I have tested a bridged VPN setup over a local lan, I'm getting transfer speeds in excess of 70 mbps with 25% CPU usage (1 core loaded), it performs just fine. Its bottleneck is IOs, when saving/reading files it'll hover around 30 mpbs rather.
