My question is, does anyone have experience with this kind of set up?
I'm using Raspbian to build the binary modules for LMS. It's running just fine.
What are the downsides compared to the special purpose distributions?
Depends on your goal. It doesn't provide the "one/few click" setup, needs longer to boot and doesn't handle crashes/power failures as easily as the optimized distributions.
