Ok, it seems I need change more than just the server.prefs file. I'm getting errors all over the place. there are references to the original location of the cache folder than just the server.prefs file.
As I mentioned the cachedir likely is part of the startup command. How to change this, I don't know. You'd have to ask in a Synology specific thread.
