Shutdown the Pi (or LMS) before shutting down the network storage device. A NAS is a piece of infrastructure, it is not supposed to go down unless it breaks. It is also possible to attach something like a 3TB 2"5 USB drive to a Pi and solve the problem (for most people at least.)
