just following up on this, I did find one misconfiguration: my 3 squeeze devices had the DNS server set to a non-existent local address (192.168.xxx.yyy) that had previously existed before I un-nested my basement and upstairs networks. After fixing that, the problem went away. Then I tried re-misconfiguring the devices in the same way and was not able to reproduce.
