My music files are all on a USB thumb drive. The problem occurs on only one folder, but it is the only folder with sub-10-second files. The other somewhat similar folder has shorter than normal files, but they all exceed 30 seconds. So your hypothesis of slow reading agrees with observations so far. I had forgotten "how I got here" in terms of controlling the Raspberry Pi to access LMS. In my current configuration, I can only use Orange Squeeze.
