If the thumb drive is is FAT formatted (and I assume is just music)  -
you may be able to defrag it and "tidy" up the files.

Speed (access and transfer rate) of USB thumb drives can also vary a
lot.

I don't how LMS is controlled matters.  I mentioned alsa and buffers in
case you have DAC and have set up special settings to avoid gaps etc.  
I don't know Max2play details but typically these setting would only be
accessible via a Max2play web browser interface or a remote shell.   I
don't knwo if Orange Squeeze can aslo play but I'm assuming you are
playing music on the Pi.
