I played with a VPN when setting up remote streaming, but I decided that a far easier solution was to set up a portable server based on a WD Passport wireless drive. I periodically make a copy of my main music library to the WD Passport drive. I don't find its battery life good enough, so I usually run it from a USB mains adapter or a power brick.
